Leader Eater: At Miller’s, the magic is in the burger buns

Leader Eater: At Miller’s, the magic is in the burger buns

If you stand anywhere in the Heights, ball up some ground beef and chuck it out into the open air, odds are that it’ll land within walking distance of restaurant where you can get a burger. Leader Eater has spent considerable space explaining my views on the pervasiveness of hamburgers in northern Houston. But one [...]

Art a la carte: Independent spirit in Houston art scene

With this column I try to bring you art shows and events that are not always mainstream or typical to the “scene.”  Much like the Heights itself, I’ve always gravitated towards the independent, entrepreneurial types. In the Houston art world, there is no shortage of independent artists. So where they go, I hope to follow and report back to you here. Art a la Carte: Last weekend for Wind Water Gallery in Heights

Stop by this weekend to say a fond farewell to Ross and Cathy Clark, who will mark their final day in business at Wind Water Gallery, 548 W. 19th St., on Sunday. They’ve been at that location for 11 years, 16 years in Houston, selling excite Asian art, furniture and accessories. They’ve been gracious hosts to the First Saturday Arts Market since its inception, too. Lots of folks are sad to see them go.

Leader Eater: Soma doesn’t fail to fill the stomach

There’s something about sushi that always dupes me. Before ordering finely-prepared fish, I will peer down the typically lengthy list of sushi rolls and think something like: Oh man, I bet that combination of peppercorn tuna and avocado with spicy aioli and tobiko and whatever other little clever fixings the chef is going to sneak [...]

Locavoracious: Zelko’s Bistro is creating a buzz about sustainability

A popular childhood reply to a question is “none of your beeswax,” but Zelko’s Bistro co-owner/Heights resident Dalia Zelko discovered a few years ago that the well-being of bees is crucial to agriculture and food production.
