Houston City Council member Abbie Kamin, who represents the Heights, Garden Oaks and Oak Forest areas as part of District C, gave birth to her first child on March 13 and is on maternity leave.
Kamin and her husband, Houston attorney Matthew Hansel, named their son Slade Lester Kamin Hansel. Kamin thanked community members for their support and well wishes in a news release from her office, which said she is Houston's first city council member to be pregnant and give birth while holding office.
“Women’s equity has always been at the forefront of policy for me, but going through both pregnancy and becoming a new mother while holding office, and in the middle of a pandemic, has given me a whole new perspective on the strength of all of the incredible women and mothers who work at the city,” Kamin said in a statement.
Kamin said March 17 that she would be spending the "next few weeks" on maternity leave to recover from giving birth and spend time with her newborn son. Her office remains open for constituents, who can call 832-393-3004 or email email@example.com for assistance.
