Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen

A summer vacation often is the highlight of the year.

But going away can become a low point if your home is victimized during your absence.

Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen reminds community members to be safe and smart when they travel, both in protecting their homes along with themselves and their families.

The constable's office provides vacation watches to all residents in neighborhoods it patrols. To sign up online for the Harris County Precinct 1 Vacation Watch Program, visit pct1constable.net/sign-up/vacation-watch.

Rosen offers the following travel tips to safeguard yourself and your home:

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash

Carrying large amounts makes you a target. If you have to carry cash, try these simple steps:

- Buy a travel wallet

- Divide money among individuals

- Keep small bills accessible

Stop/pause mail at home

Mail buildup is a clear indicator to criminals that you are not home. USPS Hold Mail Service can hold your mail safely at your local post office for up to 30 days. If you are away for longer than 30 days, you can have your mail forwarded to a safe location.

Limit posting on social media

Posting on social media gives criminals an idea of your location and how long you will be away. Try limiting your posts on social media, avoid using the "check-in" or location tagging feature and save all photos to be posted upon your return home.
