A stabbing incident in Acres Homes last week has been referred to a grand jury after the victim’s girlfriend claimed she stabbed him in self-defense, according to the Houston Police Department.

The victim, 31-year-old Xavier Berryman, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to HPD.

HPD said officers responded to a home in the 7500 block of Dyer Street around 6:45 a.m. Oct. 1 to find Berryman dead inside with an apparent puncture wound.

Berryman’s 26-year-old girlfriend had called 911 and was at the scene when officers arrived, police said in an Oct. 4 news release. She later told investigators she had stabbed Berryman in self-defense, according to an Oct. 6 news release from HPD.

HPD spokesperson Jodi Silva and a representative of the Houston Emergency Center, which fields 911 calls, declined to provide the name of the woman involved in the stabbing, citing an ongoing investigation.
