James Thomas


Police have arrested a man charged in connection to the fatal shooting of a man outside an Independence Heights convenience store, according to the Houston Police Department.

James Thomas, 62, has been charged with murder in connection to the shooting, according to Harris County court records. He remained in jail as of Tuesday, according to court records, with his bond set at $80,000.

He is accused of shooting and killing Gary Hunter, 38, according to court records.

Police at 11:30 p.m. Sept. 4  responded to a convenience store in the 8000 block of N Main Street to find Hunter, with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to police. He later died at an area hospital, according to police.

Thomas is accused of riding up to Hunter and a friend outside the convenience store with a gun in hand  and, after a brief argument, firing at Hunter, according to court documents.

Thomas was arrested and charged on Sept. 6, according to the department.
