Heights chamber awards scholarships

Eighteen high school seniors from the area have been awarded college scholarships by the Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber's education committee recognized the scholarship recipients, along with 17 local students who plan to enlist in the United States Armed Forces, during an outdoor awards ceremony Tuesday afternoon.

The scholarship recipients are Gabriella Taverna from Heights High School; Kennedy Hawkins from Houston Christian; Ethan Waiser and Christian White from Lutheran High North; Carolina Amaro, Kimberly Arellanes, Juan Felipe Azua, Christian Contreras, Nataly Estrada, Emily Martinez and Angel Soliz from Northside; Isabela Guthrie, Jacob Phillips, Madison Shindler and Agnes Wirawan from St. Pius X; and Karla Guevara Gamez, Elisha Joseph and Ainsley Vandyke from Waltrip.

The scholarships were sponsored by 11 local businesses and individuals: Adams Insurance Service, Houston Highway Credit Union, Tom and June Kimball, Members Trust of the Southwest Credit Union, Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, Primeway Federal Credit Union, Reynolds & Associates, Rotary Club of Houston Heights, SendOutCards, Sons of Herman and Dr. Ann Vermillion.
