A man is claiming he shot another man last week in self-defense and fear for his life near a local hotel, according to police.
The Houston Police Department said the victim of the shooting, 36-year-old Michael Simmons, was pronounced dead at the scene.
HPD said officers responded to the Crystal Inn Downtown at 5006 North Freeway just before 1 a.m. April 14 to find Simmons dead on the ground with the shooter, a 51-year-old man, sitting in the driver’s seat of a car near the victim.
According to police, Simmons and the other man got into an argument over a parking space, during which HPD said Simmons walked away and went to his car. Police said Simmons then allegedly confronted the other man again with his hand in his waistband. HPD said the other man, claiming he feared for his life, then pulled out his gun and shot Simmons.
The case will be referred to a Harris County grand jury, according to HPD.
