The fatal shooting of a man outside a Northside convenience store earlier this week is being referred to a grand jury after Houston police said the suspect is claiming self-defense.

The identity of the victim, a 30-year-old man, according to the Houston Police Department, is pending verification by the Harris County’s medical examiner.

HPD said officers responded to the parking lot of the N & T Food Store at 5101 Yale St. around 4:40 p.m. Monday in response to a shooting call. Police said the suspect, who an HPD spokesperson declined to name, was arrested at the scene after allegedly getting into an argument with another man inside.

The suspected shooter then left the store with the other man following him, according to police, and then allegedly fired multiple shots in the victim’s direction, striking him.

Police said no charges have been filed in the case. Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to contact HPD’s Homicide division at 713-308-3600.
