A local store employee claims he shot another man last week in self-defense and because he feared for his safety, according to police.

The Houston Police Department said the victim of the shooting, a 30-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital in stable condition.

HPD said officers responded to a shooting call at a shopping center at 6440 W. 43rd St. just after 11 p.m. March 24. According to police, a male employee told investigators he was taking out the trash when the victim rushed toward him.

The employee told police he then took out his gun and shot the man in fear for his own safety, according to HPD.

HPD spokesperson Jodi Silva said earlier this week that no charges had been filed in the incident, which she said will likely be referred to a grand jury.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact HPD’s Major Assaults & Family Violence division at 713-308-8800.
