Police have arrested a man suspected of being involved in the fatal shooting a teenage boy at an area apartment complex last year.
Christian Steward, 21, has been charged with aggravated robbery in the 228th District Court related to the death of 14-year-old Jayshawn Burrell, according to the Houston Police Department.
“What we got from investigators is that he is the only suspect, we believe, associated with this case,” HPD spokesperson Kese Smith said.
According to HPD, officers responded to the Aspen Apartments at 6150 W. Tidwell Rd. on Nov. 24, 2020 to find Burrell lying in the parking lot unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound. Citing eyewitness reports, police said Burrell got into a verbal altercation with an adult male. HPD said the argument escalated and multiple shots were fired at Burrell and another male, who was not struck. The suspect was then seen fleeing the scene in a silver sedan, according to HPD.
Steward was initially charged on Feb. 9, 2021, police said, and arrested March 8.
Smith said the Harris County District Attorney’s Office determines whether or not the charges will be upgraded. An email to the district attorney’s communications office requesting comment on the matter was not immediately returned.
