Both of the Heights High School basketball teams recently continued their stellar seasons with Class 6A playoff wins.
The boys team has so far made the most of the program's second playoff appearance in the last three years. The Bulldogs beat Cy-Fair 64-54 on Feb. 20 for their first playoff victory since the 2012-13 season, then followed it up with a 57-52 overtime win against Fort Bend Bush in an area-round playoff Tuesday night at Hopson Field House in Missouri City to advance to the their first regional quarterfinal since 1993.
In the area-round win over Bush, the Bulldogs mounted a furious fourth-quarter rally to send the game to overtime after trailing 37-27 entering the final stanza, thanks in part to six points in the quarter from Chris Smith. In the overtime period, Sir Roberts scored seven of the Bulldogs' 12 points, going 5 of 6 from the free-throw line.
Heights will next face the winner between Memorial and Fort Bend Elkins, which were scheduled to play Wednesday night.
The Lady Bulldogs, ranked 14th in 6A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, held off a tough challenge from Fort Bend Ridge Point on Feb. 20 at Houston ISD’s Delmar Fieldhouse, winning 61-58 to advance to a second straight regional quarterfinal.
Tierra Simon was a force in the middle for Heights (24-4), securing a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Gracelynn Alvarez had 20 points, five rebounds and six assists to go along with four steals for the Lady Bulldogs.
Heights was scheduled to play Wednesday against District 17-6A champion Cypress Creek (28-0), the TABC’s top-ranked team in 6A. It is a rematch of last season’s regional quarterfinal, which Cy Creek won 104-65. Heights also dropped this season’s earlier matchup 90-59 on Dec. 29.
