The Waltrip Rams have had a tough road during the 2021 high school football season, but finally managed to break through last week and get their first win of the year thanks in large part to their biggest offensive outburst of the season.

Waltrip took down the Northside Panthers 54-0 at Delmar Stadium, snapping its seven-game losing streak to start the year.

Senior running back Kahlen Sam rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, and added a 68-yard touchdown catch for the Rams. He tallied his fourth 100-yard game of the season, and it was the second time in the last three weeks he has rushed for multiple scores.

Quarterback Max Cuevas threw for a season-high 129 yards and three touchdowns for the Rams (1-7, 1-6 district), one each to Sam, Daniel Ladet, and Shaun Crawford Jr.

In other public school action, Scarborough fell to 0-8 with a 56-0 loss to Wheatley, while the Booker T. Washington Eagles (3-5, 1-4) dropped their fourth straight contest, falling to Yates 51-9.

The Heights Bulldogs (3-5, 3-1) were off last week and will look to begin a new winning streak when they take on Houston Lamar on Friday night.

St. Thomas wins Shepherd showdown

St. Thomas made the short trip up North Shepherd Drive and came away with a 37-14 win against St. Pius X, its fourth straight victory in the head-to-head series between rivals and the Eagles' ninth win in the last 12 matchups.

Jake Wright threw for 373 yards and four touchdowns – the seventh time this season he has had at least 300 yards and four touchdowns in a game. Cameron Price hauled in 10 catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns for St. Thomas (7-2, 4-1), while Samuel Mahlberg caught the other two scoring tosses. Running back Johann Cardenas had 144 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

Cale Skinner threw his fifth touchdown pass of the season for St. Pius X (3-5, 1-4) with a 39-yard strike to Jackson Mobley in the fourth quarter. It was the team-leading sixth touchdown catch of the season for Mobley, who caught three passes for 46 yards.
